1Hi, I have never done medical transcription but I use to do medical coding. From what I have experienced, medical coding pays more than transcription, and in my opinion is a more difficult job than transcription, but these are both difficult jobs.
If you are looking to work at home, there are more medical transcription positions that are at home. I’ve read on the internet that they may hire new graduates as well, but only from approved schools by the AAMT, so please do your research. Junior colleges sometimes offer med transcription, but I don’t know if this would be as good, please do your research.
Far fewer at home jobs in medical coding, I have yet to met an at-home medical coder, and I would assume they would require experience. I took an medical coding course at a JC, passed additional tests to get credentials, and it took me a year to get hired with no experience, this was a very hard field to get into.
I found coding very difficult and stressful. One really has to know so much about disease and surgeries, surgical techniques, etc. For example, having to read coronary bypass surgeries and count how many arteries were bypassed, were autogenous saphenous veins used or mammary artery or thoracic artery, was extracorporeal circulation used (heart lung machine)? Was there prolonged mechanical ventilation after the procedure? Not to mention after training you are expected to meet daily production standards.
For medical coding, it is difficult to find a job where you only have to do ONE speciality, like only cardiology, or only physical therapy. Usually those hiring are hospitals or off site coding companies, where you are expected to do a little of everything. Maybe the same would go for med transcription?
Good luck

2Medical transcriptionists (MTs) are specialists in medical language and healthcare documentation who interpret and transcribe dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient assessment, workup, therapeutic procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis, etc., editing dictated material for grammar and clarity as necessary and appropriate.
The process of medical transcription may involve editing machine-translated text. This requires listening to dictation while reading a draft created through speech recognition technology and editing the text on screen. This editing may range from minimal to extensive, depending on the capabilities of the speech recognition software and the dictating habits of the originator, and may include correction of content as well as punctuation, grammar, and style.

Beware of schools that are actually diploma mills. You have a certificate but no one will be interested to hire you.
Peace and blessings!
