   Seems like just about every move they have made in the past few years has been a bust. Washburn, Sexton, Beltre, Aurillia, Bedard… then throw in the injuries and it is a mess. They do have Ichiro though. It seems like they are coming to grips with some things though and are going to go back to basics in their farm system. For example, they sent Morrow down to learn how to become a starter… I hope they improve.

   The move wasn’t a bad move. The Mariners were never a playoff team this season so they placed Washburn on waivers. The Twins are in contention for a playoff spot so they needed a pitcher and Washburn was available. Boston took a chance on Byrd so why not Washburn? By claiming Washburn off waivers, the Mariners have freed up some money they owed Washburn.

   I think what the Mariners are trying to do is to keep some older veterans around along with the younger players they have (Jeremy Reed, Brian LaHair, Wladamir Balentin) and see if they can create some team chemistry. In this day and age it is pretty difficult to come by good free agent starting pitching. If the Mariners had given Washburn to the Twins via waivers, it would be somewhat difficult to find a proven starting pitcher on the free agents for next season.
   Seattle is a big market and I don’t think many people realize it, but they do go out there and spend the big bucks on players. If I do recall correctly, the M’s were in 1st place in the division for a good portion of 2006.
   But no, the Mariners DO NOT have the dumbest management. That would go to my favorite team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. Our management over the past decade has been HORRIBLE. We have basically given away players for free and got nothing good in return. Even though we traded Nady and Bay this season, I think we got a fair return for both of them and hopefully management will turn us around.

   I would say that Cincy has the dumbest management… getting rid of Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn in the matter of a week.
